In 2014 Spain began offering the Golden Visa (or the Investment Visa) to any foreign citizen who made an investment of € 500,000 in Spain. Although there is more than one way to make the qualifying investment, the most common and easiest is to invest in real estate. Information on more possibilities of fulfilling the requirements is available below.
This visa grants a special residence permit which means that investors can travel without restrictions throughout the Schengen area (European Union and some other countries) and also reside in Spain without the need to obtain any additional visa for 2 years after obtaining the Golden Visa. At the end of this 2 year period, an extension for a further 5 years is possible provided the requirements continue to be met.
Since 2014, a large number of Golden Visas have been provided for investors in real estate throughout Spain but mostly in Barcelona. It is the city that the majority of foreign investors wanting a Golden Visa chose for their investment and this trend will continue because of the quality of properties and the status of Barcelona with its great climate and beaches as well as the vibrant restaurants and cultural life.
