In 2014 Spain began offering the Golden Visa (or the Investment Visa) to any foreign citizen who made an investment of € 500,000 in Spain. Although there is more than one way to make the qualifying investment, the most common and easiest is to invest in real estate. Information on more possibilities of fulfilling the requirements is available below.

This visa grants a special residence permit which means that investors can travel without restrictions throughout the Schengen area (European Union and some other countries) and also reside in Spain without the need to obtain any additional visa for 2 years after obtaining the Golden Visa. At the end of this 2 year period, an extension for a further 5 years is possible provided the requirements continue to be met.

There are two options that are available for those wanting to invest in Barcelona and these are:-

  • Investment either in your personal name or in a company’s name (both non-residents). A continuous investment would be posible, but it is not recommended, since the tax situation is not advantageous. However if the investment total was more than €500,000, then it would still meet the requirements for acceptance for the Golden Visa.
  • Investment through a Spanish based company with a foreign partner. This would be the smartest way to make a continuous investment but in this case, the minimum amount needed to be invested in order to be eligible for the Golden Visa is € 1,000,000.
